Water Damage From Downspouts

Are spring showers highlighting water drainage problems? Perhaps you’re noticing condensation or damp carpets in your basement that you never noticed before? As we have said before, the number one cause of water in basements is downspouts that are not properly running away from the house.

Here are a few simple steps you can take to prevent downspouts sending water straight into your foundation and your walls:

  1. Make sure the water connecting your gutters to the downspouts is not blocked or spilling over.

  2. Step outside in the rain and watch where the water travels. What is downhill and what is uphill? Water should be traveling away from the house no matter what.

  3. Make sure your downspouts are long enough to carry water a solid distance from your house before it runs free on the terrain.
