Picking The Right Paint Type

Confused about what paint type you should get? Latex paint is the type that dominates the marketplace while oil based paints are very unique.

There is a premium grade paint, a mid-grade, and a lower grade, all independent of brand. While homestore paints are highly rated, it's because they have a variety of customers buying them. The best combination of quality for the money, in my opinion, is Sherwin Williams.

The finish of paint is as important as the grade of paint you choose. The higher the gloss, the more durable and scrubbable the paint. Gloss also shows all the imperfections of what has been painted (ie. drywall).

For walls, eggshell is a normal finish. For doors and trim, semi-gloss, satin, or pearl is a preferred finish. Ceilings are painted flat. The finish for bathroom paint is designed to minimize mildew.

Good news for homeowners with children: low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) paint is now more the norm than the exception!
